The History of Mickey Mouse - All About Mickey Mouse

Who is Mickey Mouse ?

Mickey Mouse is the icon of The Walt Disney Company. He is an animal cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1928. Mickey Mouse was born as a replacement for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, an earlier Disney cartoon. Walt Disney got the idea for Mickey Mouse from an old mouse pet he raised on his farm. Ub Iwerks, Walt Disney's loyal apprentice and animator, drew the new mouse character for Disney. The original name for the new character was "Mortimer Mouse" but Disney's wife, Lilliam convinced him to change the name, and they both agreed on the name "Mickey Mouse".

First Mickey Mouse Cartoon

Mickey Mouse made his debut on May 15 1928 in the cartoon "Plane Crazy". In this cartoon, Mickey builds his own aircraft and asks Minnie to join him for the first flight. Repeatedly trying to kiss her, and failing at each attempt, Minnie parachutes out of the plane. Distracted, the flirty Mickey Mouse loses control of the aircraft, flying out-of-control and eventually crashing. The truth is, this first release failed to impress the public but Walt Disney kept his confidence and produced a second cartoon called: The Gallopin' Gaucho.

The Modern Mickey Mouse

Mickey Mouse became the first cartoon character to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, in honor of his 50th anniversary (1978, Nov. 18). Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse were in a constant competition when it came to animated popularity. In 1988, they became partners in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit". More recently, Mickey Mouse was present in many television programs, such as:
1999-2000 - Mickey Mouse Works
2001-2003 - Disney's House of Mouse
2006 - Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
